Builders Cry Foul on Health Care Bill

Dennis Norman

The National Association of Home Builders says the health care bill that the Senate passed (H.R. 3590) places a “major financial burden on builders“.  According to the NAHB language offered by Sen. Jeff Merkley and “slipped into the Senate health care legislation at the last minute unfairly targets small construction firms with more than five workers by requiring them to provide health care coverage or face stiff fines.  Meanwhile, small businesses in all other industries would be exempt from providing mandatory health coverage if they employ 50 workers or less.”

The House passed health care bill H.R. 3962 which does not contain such a provision that negatively affects builders.  At this point the normal procedure would be for the House and Senate to work to iron out differences and reconcile the two bills to something they can agree upon.  In the meantime the NAHB has been alerting lawmakers that the senate version of the bill (with the Merkley amendment) is “patently unfair and dangerous for an econmony that is only beginning to recover from financial collapse.”

One thing is for sure…no matter what happens with regard to the Merkley amendment, we have not heard the last about the Health Care Bill.
